Abstract
With regard to recent changes in the religious population of Korea, this study discusses the socio-cultural factors that play a role in the conversion process using data from in-depth interviews of those who convert from Protestantism to Catholicism. Because this study is based on a small sample, it therefore contains many limitations as a general explanation of the conversion phenomenon. But in regard to the motive and process of conversion, it has the benefit of providing a prototype of socio-cultural factors that lead to conversion in our society, in that it includes far more practical information than that which can be obtained through statistical surveys. This study attempts an explanation of the conversion process in the perspective of sociology of religion, asserting that among the ‘pushing away’ factors of Protestantism and ‘drawing in’ factors of Catholicism, socio-cultural elements provided the decisive occasion for conversion. Among all possible socio-cultural factors for conversion, the deep-rootedness of Korean society’s family orientation, the image that destination religion Catholicism has in our society, and newly formed social networks through marriage as a religious capital were key subjects of discussion. In light of a severe lack of academic research in the area of conversion in Korea, I hope that this study will act as a foundation for the development of many further research projects.
