Abstract
This study examines the current state of religious mobility in the South Korean religious landscape. To explore this phenomenon, we analyzed data from the 2008 and 2018 Korean General Social Surveys, focusing on the religious questions to categorize respondents based on whether their childhood religion differed from their current religion. We then divided these groups by religion to assess the rate of religious mobility within each group. The results revealed that nearly half of the population has experienced a religious transition. While the Pew Research Center reported a religious switching rate of 53%, the Korean General Social Surveys of 2008 and 2018 found rates of 48.4% and 42.9%, respectively. These findings suggest that the rate of religious mobility in South Korea is notably higher than in many Western societies. This can be seen as part of a broader societal shift from a religious landscape dominated by diffused religions to one increasingly centered on institutionalized religions. As Korea’s religious landscape transitions toward institutional religions, a significant portion of the population has maintained a fluid religious identity. However, there are also individuals who retain their religious or non-religious identity. The drop in the proportion of religious individuals in the 2015 Census, which reported fewer than half of the population identifying as religious, raises the question of whether this marks the peak of religious population growth or a temporary trend. This will need to be evaluated with the results of the 2025 Census and other religious surveys. While some argue that the decline in the religious population will intensify as the post-religious society phenomenon grows, the continuing influence of diffused or non-institutional religions in South Korea’s religious landscape suggests that the movement between religious and non-religious identities may also become more pronounced. This study examined religious mobility across the entire religious landscape and explored the socioeconomic characteristics of each group. Future research should investigate whether these characteristics influence differences in societal, political, and economic opinions, to better understand the evolving nature of religious mobility in South Korea’s religious landscape.
