본 연구는 1985년 이후의 3차에 걸친 종교 인구의 센서스 결과를 성, 연령, 지역별로 분석하여, 특히 2005년 조사에 나타난 특이할 만한 변화의 원천을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이러한 이유로, 본 연구는 1985-95년의 변화보다는 1995-2005년간에 이루어진 변화에, 또한 이전과 다른 양상을 보인 개신교와 천주교의 변화에 더 초점을 맞추었다. 본 연구는 이러한 변화의 원천을 연령에 있어서는 10-40대 (1995년 기준) → 20-50대 (2005년 기준), 지역적으로는 수도권, 특히 서울에서 발견하였다. 특히 개신교에 있어 서울의 10-40대 (1995년 기준) → 20-50대 (2005년 기준) 비율의 감소는 두드러져서, 그 감소가 전국의 감소 인구와, 전체 서울의 감소 인구를 상회하였다. 한편, 천주교의 성장은 전국에 걸쳐, 전 연령에 걸쳐 고르게 나타났지만, 서울과 수도권 지역에서 특히 두드러졌고, 이러한 사실은 수도권 지역이 전국 인구에서 차지하는 비율을 감안할 때, 더 큰 의미를 지닌다 할 것이다. 또한 이러한 종교 인구 변동의 원인에 대한 가설적 분석을 통하여 개신교 성장이 1960-70년대의 사회·경제적 변동으로 인한 불안정(아노미)에 힘입었고, 1980년대 이후의 사회·경제적 안정이 가치유형의 변화를 가져옴으로써 예전과는 다른 종교적 욕구를 가져온 것으로 설명하였다. 그리고 이와 관련하여 수도권, 특히 서울의 25-55세의 연령층 (2010년 기준)에 대한 경험적인 연구와 보다 심층적인 분석이 앞으로의 종교 인구 변동의 경향 또한 제시해 줄 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
This study tried to identify the source of the change in the religious share through the analysis of three rounds of the Census since 1985 according to the gender, age and region. Especially it focused on the changes of Protestants and Catholics in the survey in 2005, because they have showed a important trend other than the previous. According to this study, the source of such a change were found at the age of 10-40 (in 1995) → 20-50 (in 2005) and regionally in Seoul, Inchon and Kyunggido. Above all, the loss of Protestants at the age of 10-40 (in 1995) → 20-50 (in 2005) in Seoul was critical and more than the loss of Protestants in the whole country. Meanwhile, the growth of Catholicism appeared evenly across all age groups in the whole country, but especially was apparent in Seoul, Inchon and Kyunggido. Such a change is meaningful, because these region have a great population. Futhermore, this study tried to explain the rapid growth of Protestantism in 1960-70 with the hypothese that the anomie caused by social and economic changes in these years has brought about such a growth, and that the social and economic safety since the mid 1980s has triggered off a change in life-style and value system, particularly in the religious needs. Therefore, it is required to do empirical study and close analysis about 25-55 years old group (in 2010) in Seoul and nearby area in the future concerning changes in their value system, particularly in the religious needs.
