Abstract
This article aims to explore the ways to attain the stillness of mind in The Philokalia. The Philokalia in five volumes, compiled by two monks of the Eastern Orthodox Church in the eighteenth century, consists of the writings of thirty-five monks and priests who practiced spiritual discipline through out their life. The Eastern Orthodox Church has valued the book as a treasure for spiritual life. However, it was not known to the public of the Western world until the twentieth century. There are many ways in The Philokalia to reach a calmness of mind during a silent prayer called apatheia in Greek. The word apatheia means that the mind is free from distractions mainly caused by desires, concerns, random thoughts, and memories. This article focused on four ways for the stillness of mind which are common to most writers of the book: the Jesus Prayer, meditation of death, practice of virtues, and tears of lamentation. The Jesus Prayer is a repeated prayer focusing on calling the name of Jesus. The person praying is distracted by those activities of the thoughts in him and is encouraged to repeat that prayer for divine help: "Jesus, have mercy upon me, a sinner." When believers repeat this prayer continuously they would experience two spiritual benefits. First, it works as a semi-sacrament for them which functions as a means of grace like the holy communion. Second, it helps them overcome the distractions of the thoughts and reach stillness of mind. The writers of The Philokalia also suggest their readers meditate on their own death frequently. To meditate on death means to imagine the time and situation of their own death. Thishelps them transcend their desires and concerns in the present and be free from distractions related to those desires and concerns. Another way to reach tranquility of mind is to practice some virtues. The contributors of The Philokalia recommend practice four virtues: self- control, patience, love, and humbleness. They believe that when the believer practices those virtues they will experience a peace of mind more easily. For instance, when a person tries to live a life of love, he wishes only good for others. This attitude will result ina simpler and more peaceful mind. Finally, the tears of lamentation work like washing water. They are not limited to tears of repentance for sin. All of the tears before God help purify the mind and soul of the believer, and as a result, his mind becomes freed from distractions of thought more easily.
