Abstract

Both Macarius the Great of Egypt (c. 300-90) and Evagrius Ponticus or Evagrius the Solitary (c. 344 or 345-99) were significant forefathers in the Eastern Orthodox Church's spiritual tradition. As contemporaneous figures, they spent their last years in the Egyptian desert. Historians believe that Evagrius was subsequently introduced to their spiritual precursors there through Macarius. Historians also acknowledge that their teachings deeply influenced the spiritual formation of the Eastern Church. This research aims to explore the main thoughts of Macarius and Evagrius regarding Christian spirituality through an analysis of their works: Macarius' Fifty Spiritual Homilies and Evagrius' four articles in The Philokalia. In Fifty Spiritual Homilies, Macarius suggests that Christians are called to live a life with a vision of theosis(deification). The biblical foundation for theosis is 2 Peter 1:4 where the scripture declares that all believers are called to be partakers of the divine nature. Actually, this idea had been emphasized by the great theologians of the Eastern Church. Central to this examination is the question, "How do human being become like God?" The answer is rooted in theosis: We partake of the divine nature when we continuously experience fellowship with God and union with God. For that vision we need divine help to experience spiritual blessings in this life. Therefore, the presence of the Holy Spirit in us is necessary through the passage of deification. One of the best ways to experience the work of the Holy Spirit is through prayer. Yet, when believers pray in silence and wait for the presence of the Spirit, they are often distracted by random thoughts, desires, concerns, and memories. Evagrius was an expert in analyzing this consciousness and suggested that the believer has to first reach a state of apatheia (stillness of mind) to truly experience the presence of God. However, it is a challenging task to reach such a state of tranquility, free from active thoughts. Therefore, Evagrius proposed that the believer should practice the discipline of nepsis (watchfulness over one's mind). In other words, the believer must filter endless distracting thoughts that surface in the form of desires, concerns, and memories. When the believer looks at those thoughts with the eyes of mind without paying any attention to them to comment he or she would experience the activities of the thoughts become come down. Thus, in this way, Evagrius hypothesized that the believer can reach a stillness of mind through the practice of nepsis and thereby, be completely devoted to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, freedom from distracting thoughts encourages a singular mental desire in the believer to experience the Holy Spirit and to contemplate the mysteries of the universe and the Trinity. I am convinced that the lessons of Macarius and Evagrius offer a direction to those who seriously seek stillness in mind in order to experience the presence of the Spirit. Those individuals will greatly benefit from the practice of these spiritual lessons in their path to Christ-likeness.
