관상기도의 성서적 유례와 성서 신학적 의미 고찰

통성기도 중심의 기도생활은 한국교회 성장에 지대한 기여를 하였으나 21세기 들어와 한국교회에는 갈수록 기도의 열기가 약해지며 신앙생활도 활력을 잃어가고 있다. 영적 생명력이 쇠퇴하며 일부 교회에서는 대안으로 다양한 침묵기도에도 관심을 기울이고 있다. 영적 위기 속에서 본 논문은 기독교 영성전통에서 핵심적인 주제의 하나가 되어 온 관상기도의 성서적 유례와 신학적 의미를 고찰하였다. 기독교 영성전통은 위 디오니시우스의 교훈 이래 정화, 조명, 완전(연합)의 단계를 영적 진보의 과정으로 추구해 왔다. 디오니시우스에 의해 하나님 이해에 대한 인식론적 차원으로 강조된 완전은 후대에 하나님의 뜻과의 일치를 강조하는 연합으로 개념이 보완되었다. 그런데 관상기도는 정화나 조명의 과정은 물론 하나님의 뜻과의 일치를 위해 중요한 방법으로 실천되어왔다. 본 논문은 먼저, 관상(θεωρια)에 대한 플라톤 철학의 개념이해와 그것을 기독교적으로 수용했던 오리게네스의 관점을 분석하였다. 플라톤은 정신이 이데아의 세계를 바라봄에 의해 신적 지혜로 충만해지는 것을 관상이라고 가르쳤다. 대부분의 초대교회 교부들처럼 헬라 사상을 수용했던 오리게네스는 플라톤의 관상의 개념들을 기독교적인 관점에서 수용하였다. 한편, 복음서에서 누가가 눅 23:48에서 관상(θεωρια)이라는 단어를 사용했는데 “십자가 사건에서 일하신 성부의 활동을 바라보고 그 계시를 이해하는 것”이라고 해석하였다. 나아가 예수님이 자신의 사역의 원리로 강조한 요 5:19의 신학적 의미가 “기도를 통해 형성된 성부와의 친밀한 사랑의 관계 안에서 성부의 일하심을 주목하고 그 일에 동참하는 것”이라고 해석하였다. 대부분의 신약학자들은 요 5:19에 계시된 이 예수님의 사역 원리를 신자들도 따라야 하는 것으로 해석하고 있다. 따라서 요 5:19의 의미는 눅 23:48의 신학적 의미와 맥을 같이한다고 볼 수 있으며 예수님의 기도생활은 그런 의미에서 그 목적에 있어 관상적인 활동이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The prayer life of the Korean church has mainly focused on Tongsung prayer, which has deeply influenced the church’s growth in the past. However, the prayer life of the Korean church has been decreasing in passion since the 21st century. Some churches are developing an interest in silent prayers as an alternative. As a response to this crisis, I have analyzed the biblical relevance and the theological meaning of contemplative prayer, which has been one of the most significant themes in the tradition of Christian spirituality. Following the teaching of Pseudo-Dionysius, the Christian spirituality tradition has practiced the three stages of spiritual progress: Purification, Illumination, and Perfection (Union). Although Dionysius used the word “Perfection” to emphasize the knowledge of God, it has later been changed as “Union” to emphasize the union with God’s will. Contemplative prayer has been practiced as a spiritual discipline for progressing in each of the stages including Purification, Illumination, and Union. For the study of the biblical relevance and theological meaning of contemplative prayer, I first reviewed the meaning of contemplation(θεωρια) from Plato’s teaching and the teaching of Origen who adopted Plato’s idea with a Christian perspective. After that, I reviewed the theological meaning of θεωρια in Lk. 23:48 and concluded that Luke claimed “it is to understand the revelation of God by observing what God was doing on the cross.” Finally, I analyzed the theological meaning of Jn 5:19. In Jn 5:19, Jesus revealed the principle of his ministry by which he, in intimate love with the Father formed by prayer, saw what God was doing and then simply participated in God’s work. Thus, the meaning of Jn 5:19 is closely related with that of Lk. 23:48 in its theological meaning. Therefore, Jesus’ prayer life was a kind of contemplative activity in its purpose.
