Abstract
This paper analyzes the Dying with Dignity by the narrative related. Dignity in Dying is related to unnecessary suffering at the end of life. Dying with dignity has been the focus of great controversy in 2009 in Korea. There are many argumentative cases about dying with dignity in Korea. Old woman Kim's story is the most famous in Korea. The woman, who is seventy-seven years old, has been in a coma since February 2008. The hospital judged Kim as an irreversible stage of death. Doctors believe she won’t live long without life support. For the first time Korea's Supreme Court has recognized a terminally-ill patient's right to die with dignity. The problem is that she is alive so far in spite of removing a respiratory device from her, This case stimuli the dispute about Dying with dignity. In this paper, I analyzed the problem of the definition of 'dying with dignity'. And I reason the ethical problem of the allowance of dying with dignity. I don't agree that ending life-sustaining treatment in respect to the patient’s will is in line with the societal norms of protecting human dignity and the right to happiness. In conclusion, I insist that human dignity is based on the right to live, not the right to die. So I am against that the dying patients have the right to make end -of -life choices in accord with their own values and beliefs. Although the patient does not want their life to be prolonged, humans shouldn't determine the end of the life. Ethically the use of the concept, dying with dignity, is not reasonable.
