에바그리우스(Evagrius)의 『프락티코스』(Πρακτικος)를 통해 본 영성 실천 단계 분석

본 연구의 목적은 에바그리우스(A.D. 345-399)의『프락티코스』(Πρακτικος)를 통해 본 영성 실천 단계를 분석하려는 것이다. 연구자는 그의『프락티코스』에는 삼 단계 영성 실천 단계, 곧, 정념을 정화하는 단계, 아파테이아를 얻는 단계, 그리고 아파테이아의 열매를 얻는 단계가 있다는 것을 제시하였다. 이 과정에서 이 논문은 그의 여덟 가지 악한 정념을 정화하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그 가운데 탐식의 정념이 발생학적으로 다른 정념을 유발한다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 특히, 귀신과의 투쟁이 정념을 정화하는 것과 완전한 아파테이아를 얻기 위해 결정적으로 중요하다고 보았다. 나아가 이 연구는 에바그리우스가 아파테이아의 개념을 스토아 철학에서 빌렸지만 자신의 사상으로 발전시킨 점을 부각했다. 또한, 연구자는『프락티코스』의 꽃인 아파테이아의 열매는 사랑이라는 점을 강조하면서 그 사랑은 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이라는 두 가지 의미를 담고 있다고 보았다. 따라서 이 연구는 『프락티코스』는 정념을 정화하고 아파테이아를 얻은 후에 두 길로 간다는 것을 보여준다. 그 두 길은 관상과 활동이다. 즉, 하나님과의 사랑의 합일과 이웃을 위한 사랑의 실천이라는 것에 초점을 맞추었다. 지금까지 대부분의 기독교 영성학자들은『프락티코스』연구에서 아파테이아의 개념과 하나님과의 사랑의 합일을 중요하게 다루었다. 그러나 이 연구에서 연구자는 아파테이아와 하나님과의 사랑의 합일만큼 아파테이아의 열매인 외적인 ‘사랑의 실천’ 또한 중요하다는 점을 제시하였다. 나아가 연구자는 한국교회가 믿음의 실천의 문제로 위기를 맞고 있는 것에 대한 대안적 방안으로 그의 세 가지 발전적 영성 실천 단계를 제안하였다. 결론적으로 이 연구는 정념을 정화하는 내적 실천이 전제되어야 외적인 사랑의 실천을 할 수 있다는 에바그리우스의 가르침을 강조함으로 한국교회가 당면한 믿음의 실천의 위기에 대한 새로운 방안을 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study aims at analyzing the stages of spiritual practice in Πρακτικος by Evagrius(A.D. 345-399). I present the three stages of spiritual practice in Evagrius' Πρακτικος, in terms of purifying passions, apatheia, and fruit of apatheia. In this process, This thesis focuses on the purifying of Evagrius' eight evil passions. Among them, it emphasizes that the passion of gluttony causes different passions embryologically. In particular, I saw that the struggle with devils was crucially important for purifying passions and obtaining complete apatheia. Furthermore, This study highlights the fact that Evagrius adopted the concept of apatheia from Stoic philosophy, but developed it into his own thoughts. In doing so, I emphasized that the fruit of apatheia, the flower of Πρακτικος, is love, and saw that love contains two meanings: love of God and love of neighbors. Therefore, this study focuses on the fact that Πρακτικος shows two paths after purifying passion and gaining apatheia. The two paths are contemplation and activity, namely union of love with God and the practice of love for neighbors. Most scholars of Christian Spirituality have importantly focused on the notion of apatheia and union of love with God in the study of Πρακτικος. In this study, however, I suggest that the external ‘practice of love’ is also important as much as apatheia and union of love with God, in that love is the fruit of the apatheia. Furthermore, I present Evagrius’ three developmental stages of spiritual practice as an alternative method to Christians in Korean church who are facing a crisis of practicing their faith. In conclusion, this study suggests a new alternative method to Korean Christians, facing a crisis of practicing their faith, by way of emphasizing Evagrius’ teaching. The external practice of love can be possible, only if it is preceded by purifying passion as the internal practice.
