16세기, 유럽 대륙과 스코틀랜드에서 종교개혁은 주로 개혁자 중심으로 진행되었다면 잉글랜드에서는 국왕에 의해 주도되고 국가의 보호를 받으며 진행되었다는 특징이 있다. “종교개혁으로 포장되었지만 실제로는 자신의 권력을 돈독하게 하고 돈주머니를 채우고, 백성들의 복종을 강요하기 위한 목적으로 행해진 것”이라는 부정적 평가도 있다. 그렇게 태동 된 영국 국교회(성공회)는 로마 교황청과 분리되면서 민족주의적 특성을 가지고 형성되었기 때문에 예배 개혁의 관점에서 보면 로마 가톨릭 전통이 강하게 남아 있고, “근본적 개혁의 미흡성”을 지니고 있음도 사실이다. 그러나 인간의 혼잡함 속에서도 하나님의 섭리를 따라 교회개혁과 예배 개혁은 꾸준하게 진행된 특징도 가진다. 헨리 8세에서 에드워드 6세, 메리와 엘리자베스 1세로 이어지는 영국의 종교개혁 흐름의 중심에는 캔터베리 대주교였던 토마스 크랜머가 우뚝 서 있다. 그는 “영국 국교회 실제적 설립자”이며, “비가톨릭 첫 번째 대주교”로 평가를 받는다. 모국어 예배 단행, 가톨릭 미사의 순서를 개혁하여 영어로 된 성찬 순서를 제시하기도 하였고, 화체설을 반대하여 성찬 신학을 정리하였고, 이러한 지침을 따라 공동예배서를 펴내기도 한다. 그 중심에 캔터베리 대주교 토마스 크랜머가 우뚝 서 있었다. 본고는 종교개혁의 또 하나의 흐름이 지닌 중요성을 인식하면서 16세기, 종교개혁의 또 하나의 흐름으로 자리매김을 한, 헨리 8세부터 엘리자베스 여왕까지의 시대에 일어난 잉글랜드 개혁 운동과 토마스 크랜머를 중심으로 단행된 예배 개혁을 역사적 관점에서 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다.
Abstract
While the Reformation on the European continent and Scotland had been underway by the reformers, it had been undertaken by kings of England in the 16th century. The church in England had broken away from the Roman Catholic Church in relation with Henry VIII who desired for invalidation of his marriage. Between 1532 and 1534, Parliament passed several acts including the Act of Supremacy, which declared the English king as the supreme head of the church in England. The reformation in England began with political affairs rather than the theological issues. Nevertheless, the reforms of the church, theology, and worship in England were continued by special divine providence. The theology and liturgy of the English church became markedly Protestant. Thomas Cranmer, the first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury, played a main role during the reign of kings like Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. Under the reign of Edward VI, Cranmer promoted major reforms of worship. He wrote and compiled two editions of the Book of Common Prayer, a complete liturgy for the church in England. The main focus of this article is to survey the Reformation in England in the 16th century and the reform of liturgy by Thomas Cranmer.
