「靑年」(1921-1940)에 나타난 성경적 평화담론과 기독교윤리적 함의

Abstract

The aim of this study is to present, analyze, and interpret such sub-topics as ‘mind and attitudinal reformation for realization of world peace’ and ‘practical expansion for realization of world peace’ under the title of discourses of biblical peace discussed in the journal “The Young Man”(1921-1940) published by YMCA, in order to explore their contemporary implications from a Christian ethical perspective. First, with regards to mind and attitudinal reformation for realization of world peace, Pilsoo Kim explored the theme of overcoming greed as a precondition for peace in the article titled “Reasons for Tubercular Propensity for War”(1923). Changje Kim addressed the issue of altruism as a precondition for peace of mind in the essay titled “At the Peace Memorial Day”(1929). Jeho Park took up awakening of human dignity in the article titled “Trend of Postwar Thought and It’s Underlying Spirit”(1922), while Woonryong examined absolute incompatible relationship between war and a Christian faith in his paper “A Christian Attitude toward War”(1924). Second, when it comes to ‘practical expansion for realization of world peace’, Chijin Han argued the realization of cosmopolitanism’s goals in pursuit of international peace in the essay titled “A Reflection on World Peace”(1930). Youngsub Kim tried to deal with achievement of international peace through coexistence and co-prosperity in his article titled “Can We Preserve World Peace?”(1931). Geonchoon Lee promoted the abolition of vertical hierarchy and social engagement in the essay titled “The Reshaping of the World and Roles of Religion”(1923). Their arguments collectively pursued thoroughly outward, ‘here-and-now’ oriented, practical and pragmatic values. Third, it is very meaningful that “The Young Man” examined a biblical understanding of peace during the Japanese colonial period in connection with two streams of philosophical ethical traditions, namely, deontological and teleological ethics. The sufficient discussion on the concept of peace found in “The Young Man” maintained the balance between discourses on practical expansion of reformation and its inner motivations. Fourth, individual ethics and social ethics are often deemed to be either a dilemma or complementary to each other in the Christian ethical tradition. It is important to note that “The Young Man” attempted to deal with both individual ethics and social in a balanced way, when it comes to a realization of world peace as one of the Christian ethical virtues. Fifth, even in the midst of suffering and ordeal under Japanese colonial rule, Korean churches made various efforts to continue discourses on world peace. It should be highly evaluated that their continuous discourses on peace were all-out efforts to carry out their Christian responsibility and obligations even under the Japanese oppression.
