미국 역사상 최초의 아프리카계 대통령 당선과 함께 2008년 미국 선거 이후 미국의 변화 가능성과 그 성격에 대해 많은 사람들이 관심을 가져 왔지만, 선거를 통해 미국 이 본질적인 변화를 이루어 갈 것인지 또는 선거 결과가 그와 같은 본질적인 변화의 시작을 의미하는 것인지에 대해서 보다 구체적이고 객관적인 논의는 이루어지지 않았 다. 본 논문은 2008년 미국 대통령 선거의 결과를 미국의 변화 가능성이라는 측면에서 객관적으로 평가하고 전망하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 2008년 선거 결과가 갖는 의 미와 유권자들의 정치 행태를 분석하고, 오바마 개인이 근본적인 변화를 이끌어 갈 지 도자가 될 수 있는지를 평가하는 것을 통해 본 논문은 지난 2008년 선거를 통해 관찰 된 현상은 이제까지의 선거에서 관찰된 것과 뚜렷하게 차이를 보이지 않는 것으로서 미국의 본질적인 변화를 예측할 수 있는 근거를 제시하지 않고 있으며, 오바마 자신도 본질적인 변화를 가져올 지도자는 아니라고 결론을 내리고 있다. 이러한 점에서 2008 년 미국 선거 결과를 미국의 본질적인 변화 가능성과 연결시키는 것은 정확하지 않은 예측이 될 가능성이 크다고 할 것이다.
Abstract
The possibility of change and its characteristics after the 2008 US presidential election that elected the first African American president have drawn great concern in Korea. Detailed and objective discussion of these points, however, has not been attempted yet. The purpose of this paper is to objectively evaluate the 2008 US presidential election in terms of whether it will be accompanied by substantial changes. This paper analyzes the election outcome, electoral behaviors in the 2008 presidential election, and issue positions of the President Obama and the Democratic Party. This paper concludes that the 2008 presidential election is not significantly different from the previous elections and not allow us to predict substantial changes in the US.
