退溪의 『詩經』 釋義 고찰에 대한 번역학적 탐색

『詩釋義』에 반영된 퇴계의 舊釋義 採錄․분석 방식은 퇴계의 『詩』 번역에 대한 인식과 밀접한 연관성을 지닌다. 기존 연구를 통해 우리는 이미 퇴계 『시석의』가 지닌 문법요소의 중시, 주희 『시집전』 및 이를 부연한 大全本 小註의 尊信, 정확한 번역의 추구, 逐字式 直譯 방식추구 등의 특징이 있음을 살필 수 있다. 그러나 기존 연구들은 경학 내지 문헌학적 고찰을 중심으로 하고 번역학적 특징에 대해서는 전면적으로 다루지 않은 것으로 조사된다. 이에 본고에서는 번역학적 각도에서 퇴계 『시석의』의 특징을 고찰하고자 하였다. 본고에서는 크게 세 가지 측면에서 『시석의』의 석의 분석 양상을 살펴보았다. 제1장에서는 퇴계가 원천텍스트인 『시』의 언어가 지닌 문법 특질에 대한 정확한 이해를 통해 『시』의 의미를 충실하게 구현하고자 한 면을 분석하였다. 제2장에서는 퇴계의 석의방식이 ‘死譯’式 逐字譯․직역이 아닌, 원문의 의미와 독자가 이해를 모두 중시한 직역에 해당함을 고찰하였다. 제3장에서는 퇴계 『시석의』가 기존 해석의 正誤를 논의하는 면도 조선시대 『시』 해석사에서 중요한 의의를 지니지만, 誤解와는 다른 異解․多解의 가능성을 제시했다는 점에서 새로운 의의를 부여할 수 있음을 제시하였다. 『시석의』에 채록된 구석의에 반영된 『시』 번역의 고민 및 퇴계 평어에 담긴 관련 사유들은 조선 중기 『시경』을 독해하는 과정에서의 관심과 인식을 집약적으로 반영한 것이라 할 수 있다. 이에 대한 보다 심층적인 연구는 우리나라의 『시경』 해석사를 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 작업이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 한편 퇴계 『시석의』와 비슷한 시기의 것으로 추정되는 ‘借字表記’의 『詩釋』 등과의 비교 분석은 우리나라『시』 번역 뿐 아니라 시언어 전반의 번역 양상을 추적하는 데 유용할 것으로 기대되는데 향후 이에 대한 본격적인 연구는 국어학 지식과 시경학 지식이 접목될 때 더욱 심화될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
Abstract
The methods of analysis that Toegye used in Si-seokeui(詩釋義) have closely related to Toegye's recognition about Shijing. According to the existing studies, we have already known Si-seokeui's characteristics, such as emphasis on grammatical issues, attachment to the interpretation of Zhuxi's Shijizhuan and its expatiation, Daquan's little exgeses, pursuit of accurate verbal translation. The existing studies, however, tend to focus on the analysis based on the view of the study of Chinese Classics or Philology. So there have been scanty opportunities for examining its characteristics from the view of translation studies. This essay analyzes Toegye's process of translation reflected on Si-seokeui. The study is mainly divided into three parts. Firstly, we analyze the concrete aspects of how Toegye realizes meanings of vocabularies and lines of Shijing by the precise observation of the grammatical feature of the source text, Shijing. Secondly, we examine that the category of Toegye's so-called literal translation is not a simple and mechanical word-for-word translation, but the literal translation that can reflect the meaning of the text enough to make readers easily understand. Thirdly, we suggest that the several interpretations for certain texts which Toegye reserved in Si-seokeui, have their own unique values, because they can be recognized as the hermeneutic spaces which have possibilities of multiple interpretations. The previous Korean seokeuis that Toegye reserved in Si-seokeui and Toegye's critical remarks intensively reflect the interests and awareness of Shijing during the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. Based on the result of this study, we suggest hereafter research: there is a text named Si-Seok written in 'ancient Korean borrowed notation', presumed to be around the same time as Si-seokeui. The comparison analysis between these two could give us another opportunity to examine Korean translation of Shijing more thoroughly. To carry this study successfully, we need to graft hermeneutic analysis of Shijing onto the Korean Linguistic Study.
