A Study on the Satisfaction and Effectiveness of General English: Focusing on the Comparison of Students' and Instructors' Perceptions

This paper aims to investigate the satisfaction and effectiveness of general English by comparing students' and instructors' perceptions. For the purposes of this study, 323 college students who were taking general English courses participated in the study. 27 native and 22 Korean English instructors also participated in the study. Survey questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect the data. The survey results showed that the students' satisfaction was lower than the instructors', and the Korean English instructors' satisfaction was higher than the native English instructors'. Also, there was a gap between the instructors' expectations and the students' perceived effectiveness. The information from the open-ended questions and interview data was analyzed according to emerging themes and categories to find out strengths and weaknesses of the general English program
