초록

Under the hypothesis that sentence processing is constrained by the language universal principle, the present study aims to investigate whether the semantic constraint has an immediate effect on initial syntactic implementation in ambiguity resolution of a main verb versus a reduced relative clause. Using a self-paced reading task, two experiments including manipulated animacy of sentential subject and structural ambiguity were conducted by representing segments differently. Forty three Korean university students proficient in English were involved. In two experiments, Korean learners have immediate access to semantic information and the resulting reading times are consistent with the predictions of interactive-processing theory. In addition, irrespective of the way segments are represented, they use the same strategies to resolve ambiguity for reduced relative clauses
