조윤제에게 국문학사 서술이란 ‘현재’를 위한 것이었다. 이러한 현재성은 민족 생활의 연속 즉 생명의 지속을 통해 검증된다는 인식에 근거하였다. 그렇지만 문학사 서술의 실상은 달랐다. 근대 이전과 근대 이후가 이원화되는 모습을 보였다. 전자가 전통(역사성)을 강조한다면, 후자는 세계성을 강조하는 방식이었다. 국문학사를 개정한 한국문학사에서는 세계성이 더 강조되어 전근대문학의 서술 내용도 적잖이 변개되었다. 이것은, 조윤제가 현재성을 중시한다고 했어도 정작 현재성에 대한 입장이 분명하지 못했던 데서 기인하였다. 근대문학사 서술에는 ‘식민지’보다는 ‘근대(서구)’가 가치평가의 척도로 작용하였다. 뿐만 아니라 식민지와 민족 분단에 대한 명확한 태도가 확립되지 못했다. 이 과제는 오늘날의 과제이기도 하다는 점에서, 조윤제의 문학사에는 여전히 ‘현재성’이 내포되어 있다.
Abstract
At the ideological level, Do-man(Cho Yun-Je)'s writing of Korean literary history is designed for 'the present', which reveals itself in the continuation of national life. His literary history shows contradiction at practical level, in that the pre-modern and modern period make the discontinuation. The premodern is framed in tradition, while the modern is framed in universality. Such a problem is enlarged in revision of Korean literary history, and we can see it stems from Do-nam's theoretical weakness of 'the present'. He never settles the relation of 'the present' and 'the past as colony', and 'the western modern'. His contradiction and struggle remains problematic, in the fact that we are still faced with the modernity and the nationality.
