Abstract

Do-Nam, Cho Youn-je laid the foundation for the study of Korean literature. Widely known, his scholarly achievement came from the study of Siga(Korean poems and songs). He was interested in the history of Korean literature, which bore fruits as HanKuk-moonhak-sa(The history of Korean Literature) after his first book, Choson-sigasa-gang(The History of Korean poems and songs). He also took very much interest in theory of Korean literature. His first accomplishment in literary theory is formalism of Korean poems, culminating in Kukmoonhak-gae-sesol(The Outline of Korean Literature). Do-Nam, Cho Youn-je formed a systemic basis for the entire Korean literature through the study of Siga. Therefore, it could be said that his study acted as opening Korean literature discourse from broader point of view. So we can say that his study ended the foundation of grand discourse on Korean literature study. He expanded the sense of mother tongue in Korean Poems into Min-jok-sa-kwan(Nationalisitic Interpretation of Literary history) in history of literature, formalism of Korean poems into an authentic ideology theory of Korean literature, a genre theory of Gasa(one type of literature in early Chosun dynasty, in the intermediate form of poem and prose) into a systematic theory of the genre of Korean literature. In this regard, the way Do-nam, Cho Youn-je did his study, which was based on macro viewpoint, makes us who get accustomed to analysis on the basis of micro viewpoint reflect on the current way of studying. Researchers must reflect on the current way of study by analysing his method of study based on macro idea.
