Abstract

In this article, I would argue that the writer of Jongbook-soseon Seo(鍾北小選叙, The Preface of Jongbook-soseon) is in fact Lee, Deok-moo(李德懋, 1741~1793) and not Yeonam(燕巖) Park, Ji-won(朴趾源, 1737~1805) as the general notion recognizes to this day, through examining the features introduced with the polishing up job. Minute comparison of the two Jongbook-soseon Seos - one from Jongbook-soseon in Damheon's old possession(湛軒舊藏 鍾北小選) and the other from Yeonamjib(燕巖集) has revealed the fact that the polished Jongbook-soseon Seo shows much more structure and is more profound and rich in implications as well. In this respect and also from the fact that the pieces of sentences revealing the essence of Yeonam's literary world, are the ones edited in, I would reason that Yeonam has done the polishing job and not actually the writing. Regarding this issue of Jongbook-soseon Seo's writer, the fact that till 1771, Lee, Deok-moo has had used the pen name of 'Chungjang(靑莊)' holds significance, for the problematic phrase, “辛卯孟冬, 靑莊漫題” in Jongbook-soseon Seo from Jongbook-soseon in Damheon's old possession, could only be interpreted as "In the winter of 1771, 'Chungjang Lee, Deok-moo' writes down his thoughts as they come into his head" and in no other way. Grounded by these facts I have drawn out my conclusion that the writer of Jongbook-soseon Seo was actually Lee, Deok-moo and what part Park, Ji-won might have taken was of polishing it up. I would think that the past discussions, recognizing Jongbook-soseon Seo as Yeonam's work should be reexamined from the starting point. I hope there be many other detailed and elaborate discussions concerning the issue of Jongbook-soseon Seo's writer followed by this one to fully answer all the questions yet unexplained in this article.
