Abstract
This paper reports the results of an investigation of what 76 middle and high school Korean teachers of English understood by CLT in terms of classroom practice at the beginning of an INSET course. The method used was sentence completion in groups of 4. The responses were analyzed in the light of recent views of what constitutes a communicative approach. The analysis revealed that the teachers had a number of misconceptions about the nature of contemporary CLT. It is hoped that this article will help teachers to form a clearer picture of what types of activities tend to take place in today’s communicative lessons, and that it will prompt them to consider (or re-consider) implementing CLT in their own classrooms. The article concludes by suggesting that teacher educators should build an understanding of theory through critical observation of practice, and that the education board examination for the recruitment of teachers should focus less on testing surface learning and more on assessing the depth of candidates’ understanding of theory-informed practice.
