This study conducted an experiment with the DCT in verbal communications. Based on the level of speaking of Korean language, research subjects have been divided into three groups (beginner, intermediate, and advanced group) to examine the types and strategies of gratitude expression. The study discusses two types of gratitude expression based on whether or not people ask others for help: gratitude as kindness and gratitude as a reward; social variables could be divided into social power, social distance and degree of burden. The strategies of gratitude expression include “identification and acceptance, reward, humility, avoidance and etc.”, “direct gratitude, illustration of the fact, subjective feeling, formalized greetings, emphasis on others, promises and rewards, unnecessary and apologies, self-declining, acceptance except for gratitude, joking and confirming”. The study analyzed different objects, situations and variables, and found that the “direct gratitude” strategy was used in conjunction with other strategies, and that “promises and rewards” occurs more frequently than the others. Beginners mainly express “formalized greetings”; advanced learners use the strategies similar to those of Korean native speakers; and intermediate learners also use the method of literal translation of Chinese into Korean.
