초록

We investigated the metrical system of nominal data of the south-eastern Gyeongnam dialects (Ham-an, Chang-won, Gim-hae, Busan, and Yang-san) on the basis of the side-dot theory. The side-dot theory is a part of Korean tonemic system, which is based upon neutralization, contrast, markedness, and dichotomy. According to this theory, tone is not just a pitch indication showing the contrast of pitch form but an underlying core element which can decide the surface pitch form. This core element has appeared in Middle Korean covering 15th and 16th century, in the modern south-eastern Gyungnam dialect, and in the modern Yeongnam and Yeongdong dialects as three elements; Pyeongseong (plain tone), Geoseong (departing tone), and Sangseong (rising tone). The system of these three elements is not a horizontal ternary system. It is divided into Pyeongseong and Cheukseong by the dichotomy and Cheukseong is, again, divided into Geoseong and Sangseong. Pyeongseong allows contrast of Cheukseong in its following syllable and itself because its neutralization effect is weak. However, Cheukseong has strong neutralization effect that never allows any tonemic contrast in the following syllable, which results in one-dot. The southern Gyeongnam dialect is similar to the Yeongnam and Yeongdong dialects in that it can be classified into three pitch forms; Sangseong, Geoseong, and Pyeongcheuk. It has, however, a different idiosyncrasy from northern Kyeongnam, Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and east-coast Yeongdong dialects in that the first syllable of Sangseong appears a little lower than the first syllable of Pyeongbok (Pyeongcheuk that has more than two Pyeongseong followed by no or any Cheukseong). In the south-eastern Gyeongnam dialect, we can find out that the pitch form makes trapezoid or trapezoid-like form if we draw a line from the first syllable to the fourth syllable. In contrast, in south-western Gyeongnam dialect, we can find out that the pitch form makes a triangle in which the second syllable makes up the vertex and the pitch of the fourth syllable is lower than that of the third syllable. In the former part of the study, we dealt with the principle of the tonemic theory, and in the latter part, classified nominal data into Pyeongcheuk, Geoseong and Sangseong according to the side-dot pattern, arranging them on the basis of the syllable, and marking tonemic and pitch form along with its region on each data simultaneously.
