The purpose of this study is to explain the function of the prefinal ending ‘-te-’ in modern Korean from the perspective of Mental Space Theory (Cutrer 1994; Fauconnier 1994, 1997). This paper argues that ‘-te-’ is a space-builder which creates ‘a recognition space (space R)’ prior to speech time, and when ‘-te-’ is used, the speaker’s viewpoint (V-POINT) shifts from BASE (or, utterance space) to space R. It is also shown that the mental space approach can account for various phenomena related to ‘-te-’; contextual meanings of ‘-te-’, constraints on ‘-te-’, and ambiguous meanings depending on whether the situation perceived by the speaker in space R is consistent with that of present utterance space or not, all of which are proved to be related to space R and V-POINT shift.
