This study analyzes the face threat of speech through the act of compliment in Korean and Chinese language by using the drama Corpus as an analysis topic. To analyze the face threat of compliments in Korean and Chinese language, sociolinguistic variables such as power distance and sex were analyzed, and the types of compliments were classified into evaluative/emotional compliments and direct/indirect compliments. First of all, looking at the statistical analysis results of the two languages, compared to Chinese language, the proportion of speech act of evaluative compliments aimed at a positive evaluation of listeners in Korean is greater, whereas in the case of the Chinese language, the speech act of emotional compliments whose purpose is to form a bond with the other person was relatively larger in proportion. In addition, in Korean, the evaluative compliment with a relatively large face threat compared to the emotional compliment which was mainly performed in higher to lower hierarchy relationships, whereas in Chinese, it was performed relatively evenly in all relationships. In conclusion, Korean language is highly sensitive to sociolinguistic variables such as hierarchical sequence and sex, and strategies to minimize face threat are relatively actively performed whereas in Chinese, the degree of implementation of these strategies is relatively insignificant.
