Abstract

In Russian morphosyntax, the genitive of negation is one of the grammatical phenomema which is difficult to account for. The various approaches since Thomson(1903) have focussed on discribing and defining various parameters which are considered to determine the selection of the genitive of negation. But they have not attained explanatory adequacy. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explain the license condition of the genitive of negation by defining its logico-semantical structure as "weak" NPI (= Negative Polarity Item). In the section 1, I provide an overview about the distribution of.the genitive of negation, correlating it with the accusative or nominative as its counterpart. This overview makes explicit the problems which arises when one tries to define how to select the genitive of negation according the existing approaches. Section 2 offers an analysis of the syntactic and semantic structures of the genitive of negation as weak NPI. Especially, it focuses on inherent relationship between the genitive of negation and the context which constitutes the upper of downward-entailing. Section 3 treats problems concerning the selection condition of the genitive of negation. When it occurs in the context which does not constitute the upper of downward entailing, its semantic function is not differentiated from that of the accusative or nominative as its counterpart. In this case, there are only morphosyntactical differences between them. This is why it happens sometimes that certain idiomatic phrases, when negated, demands obligatorily one of them as grammatically fixed form. As for the context which blocks the selection of the genitive of negation; it is"the case where, with the noun phrase characterized by the specificity, it is impossible to constitute the downward-entailing.
