Prevalence of intestinal diseases is rapidly increasing due to environmental pollution, lifestyle changes, and intake of processed food. Effects of Oxya chinensis sinuosa on intestinal health remain unclear. Edible insects are excellent sources of proteins and other micronutrients and exert protective effects on the intestine. In this study, we aimed to examine the anti inflammatory effects of O. chinensis sinuosa methanol extract (OCM) in vitro using HT 29 human colon adenocarcinoma cells. Antioxidant activity test revealed that the radical scavenging and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities of OCM increased in a dose dependent manner. Notably, OCM was not cytotoxic to HT-29 cells at a concentration of 2 mg/mL. OCM dose-dependently decreased the expression levels of phosphorylated mitogen activated protein kinases and cytokines (Interleukin-8) in lipopolysaccharide-induced HT-29 cells. Additionally, OCM decreased the mRNA expression levels of interleukin-8, C-C motif chemokine ligand (CCL)-2, CCL5, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand-10, and CCL20. Collectively, our results revealed that OCM exerted antioxidant effects against inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting the inflammatory pathway, highlighting its potential as a nutraceutical for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
