Abstract
We suggest a reason how players who hire their own delegates participate in contests. For the reason, we examine a contest in which two players have the option of exerting or not their own effort. We consider a two-stage game. In the first stage, each player decides whether he exerts effort in the second stage of the game. In the second stage, after knowing players' decisions, players (if relevant) and delegates choose their effort levels simultaneously. The findings are as follows. First, with the low value of the prize, players do not exert their effort; otherwise, they do. Second, with the high value of the prize, the game faces social dilemma: Rent dissipation increases with players' positive effort levels.
