경제 논리가 삶의 구석구석을 지배해가고 있는 오늘날 교육도 예외는 아니다. 이런 속에서교육은 경제 논리가 아닌 교육 본연의 논리를 따르는 것이라고 외면할 수만 없다고 생각한다. 오히려 이익을 추구하는 경제 논리와 가치의 문제를 연결 지어 사유하면서 이 속에서 교육의 방향을 묻고 모색해야 하지 않을까? 이런 문제의식에서 본고는 대안적 발전론을 주장한 경제 학자 센(Amartya Sen)의 잠재가능성 접근(capability approach)을 살펴보고, 잠재가능성 접근의 교육적 의미와 가능성을 탐색해보고자 한다. 센은 현대 주류 경제학이 공리주의의 효용만을 따지는 것을 비판하고, 경제학이 본래 가졌던 윤리학의 기원을 회복할 것을 역설하며, 발전이란 자본의 축적으로만 따질 수 있는 것이 아니라, 인간의 자유와 잠재가능성의 확대라고 주장한다. 이러한 센의 잠재가능성 접근은 경제논리에 지배된 교육 너머의 교육을 탐색할 수 있는 가능성을 갖는다고 생각하기 때문이다. 이상의 연구 목적을 위해 Ⅱ장에서는 경제논리에 맞추어가는 교육의 시장화를 비판하고, Ⅲ장에서는 센의 잠재가능성 접근을 센의 문제의식과 잠재가능성 접근의 특징을 중심으로 개관하고 Ⅳ장에서는 잠재가능성 접근이 교육에 시사하는 가능성과 한계를 함께 논의할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the capability approach of an economist, Amartya Sen, and to discuss education as capability expansion. Sen criticizes that modern mainstream economics is concerned about the utility of utilitarianism, and emphasizes the recovery of ethics origin, which economics inherently had. He actually asserts that development is the expansion of human's freedom and capability, saying development cannot always be reckoned with only capital accumulation. Sen's capability approach is considered to offer a clue, through which education, beyond the education dominated by currently predominant economic logics, can be explored. For this purpose, Chapter II criticizes the commercialization of education, universities and education of teachers in line with economic logics and firms' demand. Chapter III looks into Sen's capability approach focusing his critical mind and the main concepts and characteristics of capability approach. Chapter IV discusses the alternative possibilities of capability approach on education.
