Abstract
This paper investigates the evolutionary interaction of reciprocal consumers and self-interested firms in a market game in which a firm chooses a high or low price and a consumer chooses to purchase or boycott a good. The firm chooses the high price when both are self-interested. If the self-interested consumers choose a reciprocal strategy and boycott a high price, the firm chooses the low price and shares its efficiency as the proportion of consumers choosing the reciprocal strategy increases. Furthermore, if the consumers have additional reciprocal utility in terms of preferences, all consumers will eventually become reciprocity preferences consumers, whereas the firm will choose the low price. This result demonstrates how a social firm can emerge if consumers prefer reciprocity.
