본 연구를 통해 우리나라에 투자한 일본 해외직접투자 기업들의 지역내 상호작용을 각 기업들 간의 거리를 통해 추정하였다. 추정은 일본 해외투자기업들의 주소를 지리정보시스템을 이용하여 지도에 투사하고 각 동일 산업에 속한 일본 해외직접투자 기업간 거리를 수도권, 경상북도, 경상남도 및 전라도 권역으로 나누어 수집하고 커널추정(Kernel Estimation)을 통해 가장 높은 빈도수를 보인 거리로 추정하였다. 또한 지방행정기관 및 지형적인 영향에 따른 외생적인 효과를 제어하기 위하여 동일지역 내의 핫스팟(hot-spot)의 개수를 적절히 통제하여 사회적인 상호작용에 대한 효과를 식별하였다. 따라서, 한국에 직접 투자한 일본 기업들간의 사회적 상호 작용의 범위를 물리적 거리로 추정하여 제시할 수 있었다. 일본 해외투자 기업들의 입지에 대한 지역별 특징을 찾았으며, 이러한 정보를 바탕으로 일본 다국적 기업 유치를 통해서 지역 경제를 활성화시키려는 지역정책입안자들에게 정책 강도를 권역별로 상호비교할 수 있게 제공함으로써 지역 정부의 해외직접투자 유인정책에 대한 실행정도에 대한 기준을 제시하였다.
Abstract
This paper reinterprets localization as the spatial concentration of foreign direct investment (FDI) firms within the same country and measures the influence of specific regions on the concentration in certain areas of a particular country. Based on the discussion by Duranton and Overman(2005), the degree of interaction between firms was measured through the distance between them, but the distance between hot-spots was used to control for the exogenous effects of local government policies that influence the use of specific spaces. Specifically, the above methodology was applied to estimate the localization scope of Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) manufacturing firms in South Korea by using the distances between them. First, a density-based clustering method was used to classify the regions into the Seoul Metropolitan Area, Chungcheong Area, Jeolla Area, Gyeongbuk Area, and Gyeongnam Area, and the distances between Japanese firms located in each region were measured. Then, spatial statistics and kernel density functions for the distribution of inter-firm distances in each region were estimated. Subsequently, the localization scope, adjusted for the standard distance, was calculated using the number of potential hot-spots within the standard distance to control for exogenous effects. The results showed that the localization intensity per unit distance in the Seoul Metropolitan Area was approximately 2.9 times higher than in the Chungcheong Area, 3.6 times higher than in the Gyeongbuk Area, 3.7 times higher than in the Gyeongnam Area, and 5.9 times higher than in the Jeolla Area. Thus, local governments seeking to attract Japanese FDI manufacturing firms could use this as a benchmark to understand the necessary level of policy efforts relative to the reference region.
