Abstract
This study explored how three general and three special education teachers in Seoul and Kyeonggi Province thought about learning disabilities through qualitative research. In addition, this study attempted to understand how general education teacher participants had different thought on learning disabilities compared to special education teacher participants. The result of analysis on interviews with the six teachers shows that the participants usually had two types of thoughts about learning disabilities, student's characteristics alone or both student's characteristics and environmental reasons. In particular, four teacher participants who considered learning disabilities from both student's characteristics and environmental reasons had different thoughts about how much student's characteristics or environmental reasons are related to learning disabilities. In addition, the result of this study did not show a distinct difference between general education teachers and special education teachers on the thoughts of learning disabilities, and indicated that teachers' various situations such as experiences and thoughts were related to their thoughts on learning disabilities. The result of this study implies that Korean teachers do not have a consistent belief on learning disabilities. Through this study, the researcher insists that it is necessary to re-conceptualize the definition and concept of learning disabilities which can provide academic and emotional support despite the labeling of learning disabilities.
