Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of art instruction based on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on task performance & interaction of students with autistic spectrum disorders in the inclusive middle school classroom. The subjects of this study were 2 students diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders and 37 general students. Students' achievements and their behaviors were observed and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to find out the effectiveness of the art instruction with the UDL. The results were as follows; First, subjects were participated more actively in performing the art class lesson. Second, subjects were interacted with other classroom students more actively. Frequency, duration, and interaction with other peers and the teacher were increased significantly. Students without disabilities were also actively participated in the class and changed their attitudes toward their friends with disabilities more positively.
