Abstract
How can gender-based inequality in the labor market be mitigated? Both Marxism and Neo-classical economics argue for a linear progression of gender equality in the labor market in the sense that they predict a reverse relationship between gender inequality and the strength of market competition. However, these predictions are not consistent with the observed results. The reason why such a linear progression hypothesis is not empirically supported is because the reality of gender inequality in each society differs greatly from one another, so does the evolutionary trajectory of gender equity. In the vein of recent attempts of gendering varieties of capitalism, this study analyses concrete processes in which gender inequality in the labor market is reduced in the six advanced capitalist countries. Drawing in theoretical resources from varieties of capitalism, this study utilizes a distributional approach to analyze changes in male and female earnings distributions. Using ISSP data of 1993, 1994 and 2006, 2007, this study analyzes the changes in the gender earnings distributions of the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Japan, Norway, and Sweden. The results reveal that the process of which gender equality is achieved in the labor market differs by production systems. In the liberal market economy, changes of gender-specific factors contribute more to the reduction of gender wage gap, whereas in the coordinated market economy, it is the structural factor that contributes the most.
