Abstract

According to the growing participation of women in the labor market, male breadwinner families are in decline and is being replaced by dual earner families. But male breadwinner norms and gender inequality in family is sustained persistently. This paper analyses the historical formation, changing paths and the theoretical concept of breadwinning work. Breadwinnng work is divided two dimensions as follows. First, de facto breadwinning are explained by earnings, labor force participation, and time committed to the labour market. Second, normative breadwinning are explained manhood as the provider , social expectation to men's role and identity. In order to claim the decline of male breadwinner families, more multidimensional approach to 'breadwinning' is required.
