Abstract

Based on cultural psychological research, this study explored the impact of culture on disaster reporting, comparing the Korean and American news coverages. It analyzed how major disasters were interpreted and presented in newspapers depending on cultural biases. Focusing on news photographs on natural disasters and major accidents, we classified four types of disasters (natural disasters, unintended social disasters, intended social disasters, and disease disasters) and then selected four cases in Korea and the United States, respectively. The Chosun Ilbo (Korea) and the New York Times (US) were selected for analysis. Conducting content analysis, we found that the photographs of the Korean and American newspapers on the disasters include the cultural bias of the East and the West. In particular, Korean news photographs tend to focus on the whole situation with the perspective of the outsider, while American news photographs primarily emphasize individual characteristics with the perspective of the insider. This study contributes to journalism research by examining how cross-cultural differences play a role in reporting news coverages on natural disasters and major accidents. Finally, the implications of our findings are discussed in detail.
