Abstract
Hofstede’s (1980) cultural comparison theory has seldom been applied to Korean news research. This study analyzed how collectivist and individualist cultures are reflected in the disaster reporting of Korean newspapers. The chosen disaster for this exploration is the Sewol Ferry tragedy, marking its 10th anniversary. The potential cultural bias in the articles was measured in terms of accident causation, accident predictability, and attribution of responsibility. The analysis revealed that collectivist elements were most frequently found in opinion articles (editorials and columns). Specifically, 68.1% of analyzed opinion articles exhibited ‘situational awareness’ by comprehensively considering various circumstances of the accident; 84.7% showed ‘post hoc predictability,’ suggesting the accident was inevitable; and 69.8% attributed the responsibility for the accident to social structures rather than individual wrongdoers, identifying society, government, and the state as the agents responsible for solving the problem. Furthermore, 84.9% of commentary articles and 79.6% of straight news articles also contained elements of ‘post hoc predictability.’ This pattern of disaster reporting from a collectivist perspective showed little difference between the conservative (Chosun Ilbo) and progressive (Hankyoreh) media outlets. This study demonstrates that ‘collectivist culture is primarily reflected in opinion articles in Korea, and this cultural element overrides the differences in ideological news frames.’
