Abstract
The purpose of this research is to develop a program of gender sensitive instruction in mathematics and to analyze its impact on the affective aspect of students' learning. Informed by feminist pedagogy, this program was developed to value students' own voices and agency in mathematics practice. Thus, the mathematical tasks were based on real world problems which were mathematically and experientially realistic to the 9th graders. In the class, students were encouraged to experiment, explore, discuss, and make negotiation of mathematical meanings that they had constructed. All the participants were 9th-grade female students. Most participants of the program attended middle schools in Seoul or Kyoungi-do. Data were collected over a three-week period of the program through participant observation, focus group and individual interviews, documents. Data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. The central themes that emerged from the analysis were authorship, confidence and patience, and recognizing their various kinds of voices through small-group discussion. The analysis demonstrates the positive effect of the developed program on students' attitudes toward mathematics. The findings imply that the developed program can provide an gender-sensitive model of mathematics instruction to improve teaching and learning of mathematics in school.
