Abstract
We examined how perceived bias of newspaper editorial affects consumers’ intention to participate in automobile recalls for environmental defects through psychological reactance. A web-based experiment was conducted with a 2 (political orientation: conservative vs. progressive) by 3 (media: conservative vs. progressive vs. neutral) factorial design with participants’ political orientation and media as between-subjects factors. The results of a multi-group structural equation modeling analysis demonstrate that exposure to a newspaper editorial from out-group media encouraging people’s participation in automobile recalls for environmental defects is negatively associated with intention to participate in automobile recalls. The effect of participant–media agreement in regard to political orientation on automobile recall participation intention was explained by perceived bias of and psychological reactance to the newspaper editorial. However, the indirect effect was observed only for those who do not own diesel vehicles. Implications of the findings and limitations of the study are discussed.
