Abstract

Selective exposure refers to the tendency of individuals to choose information that matches their existing attitudes or beliefs and to avoid information that does not. This study examined public’s tendency of selective exposure to nuclear-related information by letting individuals read a news article that emphasizes the benefits of nuclear power and then asking them select additional (positive or negative) news articles to read. As a result of online experiments, participants (N = 180) tended to prefer articles that matched their existing attitude toward nuclear power in Korea (support or opposition). These selective exposure tendencies appeared in both the nuclear support group and the opposing group. This study also analyzed the psychological mechanism of selective exposure by analyzing participants’ tendency to select articles from two perspectives: (a) cognitive dissonance, and (b) difference in perceived message credibility. As a result of the experiment, individuals in the opposition group showed the greater tendency of selective exposure as they had lower credibility perception of the news article they read. Finally, this study found the interaction effect between participants’ prior attitude toward nuclear power (opposition vs. support) and political orientation (conservative vs. moderate vs. liberal) on selective exposure to news articles on nuclear power. The theoretical and practical implications of this experiment were discussed.
