Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of ‘aesthetic labor’ and explores how aesthetic labor is practiced in Korean society with a case study. Aesthetic labor, first termed by Warhurst et al.(2000), is defined as the mobilization, development and commodification of laborers’ physical traits for corporate/organizational benefit. This practice is correlated with the increase of service jobs, which has led to changes in the required capacities and skills in these sectors. Soft skills such as interpersonal and social skills have become more important than hard, technical skills, which include attitude, emotion and personal grooming etc. Aesthetic labor is different from emotional labor in terms of its focus on corporeality, and sexualized labor in that it appeals to the senses. This study firstly examines the forms and dynamics of aesthetic labor in Korea with a focus on sales in department stores or duty free shops. The findings are as follows: 1) corporations/organizations recruit people possessing the desired attitude and appearance, 2) after selection, laborers are molded into the appropriate image as a staff member for the projection of a particular corporate image/identity through training related to service and appearance rules etc., and 3) the appearance norm of corporations/organizations is practiced under their regulation and management. Secondly, some points raised after an investigation of aesthetic labor are discussed as follows: 1) what ‘beauty’ or ‘aesthetic’ means in the context of aesthetic labor, which is associated with ‘tidiness’, ‘cleanness’ and/or ‘elegance’, 2) what an acceptable look for staff interacting with customers is, 3) how laborers have become human hardware, required to portray the corporate/organizational aesthetic for brand distinction and its image, and 4) how laborers have changed in both their personal appearance and practices for a better image.
