Abstract
Intimate partner violence has a negative impact on all aspects of victim’s everyday life and sometimes it ends with fatal consequences. Despite the danger domestic abuse poses to victims, the state is less likely intervene in intimate partner violence except there are obvious signs of physical abuse against victims. Scholarly discussions on coercive control have pointed out that physical violence is not the only symptoms of domestic violence. Rather, it is argued that non-physical abuse such as coercive control is crucial for understanding the gendered nature and harms of intimate partner violence. Based on distorted perception of women, perpetrators use strategies of coercion, control, humiliation, intimidation, isolation, exploitation to psychologically subjugate victims. The severe and chronic pattern of malicious behaviors eventually seek to deprive victims of freedom and liberty. While U.K criminalizes coercive controlling behavior against intimate partner, it does not seem that the S. Korean government clearly understands what women are experiencing and suffering in intimate partner violence. Government’s lack of knowledge and indifference about domestic abuse can contribute to state-created danger. Obviously, the more the state is aware of subtle forms of coercive control, the better victims of domestic abuse can get help and stay safe.
