본 논문은 소년 위기(boy crisis) 및 알파걸(alpha girls) 담론을 분석하여 학교와 교육 영역에 나타난 백래시의 의미 지형을 분석한다. 이 두 개의 담론은 서로 긴밀하게 얽혀 남성과 여성의 성공을 제로섬 게임으로 대립시키면서, 소녀의 학업 수준 향상이 소년의 희생을 대가로 한다는 관점을 공유하고 있다. 이를 기반으로 성적 차이의 의미, 학교 교육의 가치, 그리고 페미니즘과 성평등의 정의를 재구성하는데 그 내용은 다음과 같다. 우선 소년 위기 및 알파걸 담론은 공히 남학생의 학업 부진 현상을 과장하여, 학 교 환경과 교육 과정이 소녀에게 유리하게 조성되어 있다고 진단한다. 그리고 성차 본질주의에 기반해 발달 과정상의 남녀 차이를 학습 방식의 차이와 매개 없이 연결시켜 젠더 이분법적 고정관념에 기반한 교육 담론을 생산해 왔다. 둘째, 두 담론은 학업 성 취를 학교 교육의 유일한 가치로 삼고 있다는 점에서 능력주의적 경쟁 체제를 고도화 해온 공교육의 시장화 논리에 호응하고 있으면서도, 그로 인해 발생한 효과와 문제를 소녀와 여성의 부당한 이익으로 이전시킨다. 셋째, 소년의 위기와 알파걸 담론은 소년의 부진과 소녀의 성취가 여성의 권리만을 배타적으로 추구해온 페미니즘으로 인한 결과로 보면서, 젠더 형평성을 성평등과 페미니즘의 새로운 이상으로 제안한다. 이와 같은 분석 결과는 학교와 교육이 사회의 어느 영역보다 선도적으로 백래시가 일어난 주요 진앙지 가운데 하나이며, 오늘날 백래시는 성평등 제도와 정책에 대한 단순한 반발과 저항만이 아니라, 페미니즘 의제를 전유하는 포스트 페미니즘의 경향으로 파악되어야 한다는 점을 보여준다.
Abstract
This article reviews the discourses about the boy crisis and alpha girls that have surfaced globally since the 1990s. It examines the topography of meanings in schools and education realms in general. The achievement of women and men is seen as a zero-sum game in these two intertwined discourses, which hold that boys’ sacrifices are what allow girls to advance in their learning. Furthermore, these discourses recompose the definition of feminism and gender equality as well as the significance of public education and sex difference. These analyses demonstrate that of all the social sectors, schools and education are the epicenters that have experienced the most backlash. It reveals that the backlash to the institutions and policies of gender equality now extends beyond mere repulsion and resistance and includes post-feminist tendencies that appropriate feminist agendas.
