Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of emotion recognition of real–face expression and emoticons on interpersonal relationship of middle school students. For this purpose, 45 middle school students participated to the emotion recognition task and filled out self-report questionnaires. The whole process was implemented using a mobile smartphone application. The result of this study is summarized as follows. First, in facial recognition experiments, when the emoticon stimulus was presented, the accuracy rate was higher than the actual face stimulus and the response time of the correct answer was faster. Second, the actual face with strong emotional intensity showed a significant correlation with the emoticon stimulus. However, the actual face with weak emotional intensity did not show any significant correlation with the emoticon stimulus. Third, girls more accurately recognized emotions with weaker emotional intensity than boys. Fourth, as a result of examining the relationship between facial recognition ability and interpersonal competence, interpersonal competence decreased when emoticon stimulus were better recognized. Based on the results, suggestions for future research and limitations were discussed.
