Abstract

[Purpose] This study aimed to explore the concept of co-teaching as perceived by pre-service special education teachers and to provide foundational data on how to effectively guide co-teaching in future teacher education programs. [Method] A concept mapping study was conducted to structure a broad range of perceptions using an inductive approach. Participants were 27 undergraduate students majoring in special education at K University, all in their third year or above. The study followed the six standard steps of concept mapping methodology. [Results] A total of 49 statements regarding the characteristics of co-teaching were generated. Based on similarity ratings, five clusters across two dimensions were identified. The poles of the first dimension (X-axis) were labeled “Preconditions-Goals” and named the “Stages of Change” axis. The poles of the second dimension (Y-axis) were “Advantages-Disadvantages,” named the “Direction of Perception” axis. The five clusters were: (1) Realization of Inclusive Education, (2) Diversification and Individualization of Instruction, (3) Teacher Collaboration, (4) Implementation Conditions, and (5) Limitations and Challenges. The rating for level of agreement showed that there was a strong consensus on the necessity of teacher relationships and collaboration. [Conclusion] Pre-service special education teachers demonstrated a clear understanding of the concept of co-teaching, comprehensively addressing its purposes, strengths, and weaknesses. However, when compared with study findings on in-service teachers’ perceptions of co-teaching, their references to environmental contexts appeared relatively limited, suggesting the need for practical understanding and preparation for co-teaching that takes school contexts into account from the undergraduate stage.
