Abstract

[Purpose] This study aims to investigate and analyze special education teachers’ perceptions of the factors influencing the implementation of school-wide positive behavior support. [Method] For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 180 special education teachers working in Gyeongsangbuk-do to gather their opinions on the importance and implementation levels of factors related to school-wide positive behavior support. Additionally, the study explored special education teachers’ perceptions of necessary improvements in the school system to maximize the effectiveness of positive behavior support. [Results] First, while special education teachers generally recognized the importance of the factors influencing the implementation of positive behavior support, they perceived the actual implementation level as low. The perception of importance was generally high, while the perception of implementation was low across different age groups and work places. Second, there were many opinions suggesting that meetings should be held regularly when students in need of positive behavior support are identified. The most common responses included the need to include key staff members in team meetings and to discuss school-wide matters during weekly grade-level meetings. Furthermore, many special education teachers responded that the vice principal should convey information during faculty meetings. [Conclusion] Based on the results of this study, it is expected that successful implementation of positive behavior support will be possible. Since this study is based on special education teachers in Gyeongsangbuk-do, follow-up research expanding to other regions should be pursued. The core of this study is to address the gap between the importance and actual implementation of positive behavior support and to propose ways to improve its execution for more effective outcomes.
