Abstract

[Purpose] In this study, we conducted in-depth interviews were conducted with seven special education teachers for the hearing-impaired, who had previous experience in the field of special education, to investigate their perceptions of the status of educational support for them and their satisfaction levels. [Method] This study aims to individuals in working in a better educational environment by using qualitative research methods, acknowledging each participant’s unique experiences, and deeply analyzing their needs through the interview process, recorded content, and analysis procedures that occur during the research process. [Results] First, there were three types of educational support for special education teachers for the hearing-impaired: physical support using assistive technology devices such as hearing aids, human support such as sign language interpretation and stenographic interpretation and legal, administrative, and institutional support for guaranteeing the rights of special education teachers and providing assistance for their educational activities. Among these, human support—the support provided by professional sign language interpreters and stenographers—was utilized to the highest level and helped make communication smoother. Second, the level of satisfaction with educational support among special education teachers for the hearing-impaired appeared to vary depending on the main mode of communication used. In the case of using sign language, there was an overall high level of satisfaction with human support that enables real-time communication, but there were still complaints about the lack of support workers and the lack of a swift support system in emergency situations. Meanwhile, in the case of using spoken language, there was an overall high level of satisfaction with physical support, such as FM wireless microphones, but the level of satisfaction with institutional support remained low. [Conclusion] Accordingly, institutional support must be urgently established, thereby creating an environment in which all special education teachers for the hearing-impaired receive equal educational support. The aforementioned proposed changes are likely to help special education teachers for the hearing-impaired perform their roles more effectively and provide their students with better learning experiences.
