Abstract
[Purpose] This study aims to critically examine the limitations of the Theory of Mind (ToM), a dominant framework for understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and to propose the Intense World Theory (IWT) as an alternative approach that enables a more integrated understanding of ASD's sensory, emotional, and cognitive characteristics. [Method] A comparative analysis was conducted between ToM and IWT, focusing on their theoretical assumptions, explanatory scope, and applicability. The analysis centered on evaluating their effectiveness in explaining both social and non-social characteristics of ASD, including sensory hypersensitivity, emotional hyper-reactivity, and repetitive behaviors. [Results] While ToM provides effective insights into the social deficits of ASD, it lacks explanatory power for non-social traits, individual variability, and strengths. In contrast, IWT interprets ASD as a consequence of hyper-reactive neural systems and excessive plasticity, offering a more nuanced understanding of sensory and emotional sensitivities, and redefines repetitive behaviors and restricted interests as manifestations of potential strengths. [Conclusion] Understanding ASD should move beyond deficit-based models towards a multidimensional and integrative paradigm. The complementary application of ToM and IWT presents practical implications for developing personalized intervention strategies and improving the quality of life for individuals with ASD through inclusive educational, therapeutic, and policy measures.
