Abstract

In this study, we have applied the “Theory of the Mind” Intervention Program to evaluate its effects on the emotional intelligence and social behavior of autistic children. The subjects of this study are autistic children enrolled in a regular elementary school in Busan. Subjects are children with a minimum IQ of 50; children who are diagnosed with autistic disorder and children who have failed to pass the intervention test of Theory of the Mind. The results areas follows. Firstly, the ability of autistic children to recognize others’ controllability showed the most growth. It shows that the “Theory of the Mind” intervention program is effective for autistic children to express self-awareness skills, self-regulation skills, awareness of others, and especially the awareness of the emotional states of others through words and expressions. Secondly, the individual intervention program for the emotional regulation showed no significant effect on social behavior, competence and interpersonal relationship. The children’s ability to adapt to the school’s social environment is interpreted as circumstantial. We have looked into this program specifically in the area of variation of emotional intelligence and social behavior of children with autism. Basis of the proposed changes in the long run shall be on the result and outcome of the study.
