Abstract

In the present study we investigated the emotional recognizing ability from the affective prosody and context in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and typically developing (TD) children. The participants were 13 IDD children from 9 to 12 years old and 13 TD children with matching chronological age. They were asked to identify the speaker’s emotion from three different tasks; (a) non-meaningful sentences with affective prosody (b) linguistically meaningful sentences with affective prosody and (c) non-meaningful sentences with affective prosody combined with facial expressions. The results were as followed. (a) The IDD group didn’t significantly differ from the TD group when affective prosody was the sole cue. (b) There were significant main effects of group and context and significant interaction effect of group × context. When the prosody didn’t match the linguistic content, IDD children performed significantly lower than TD children. (c) There was a significant main effect of context only. These results indicate that IDD children were able to understand the emotion on the basis of affective prosody. However because of IDD children’s low intelligence and information-processing capacity, they relied more on the obvious content to infer the speaker’s emotion than TD children when prosody contradicted with linguistic content. Furthermore the two groups considered both affective prosody and facial expression when the prosody was combined with a predominant nonlinguistic cue.
