이 연구에서는 초기 개신교 선교사들의 한국어 학습에 대해 고찰하고자 <미감리회> 한국 선교회의 연회록인 『Official Minutes』를 검토하였다. 그 결과 <미감리회> 선교회에서는 선교사들의 한국어 학습을 돕기 위한 학습자 평가와 관리가 주된 임무였던 <한국어 학습 위원회>를 적어도 1893년부터 1916년까지 선교회 내에 두었으며, 이 위원회를 중심으로 선교사들의 한국어 학습과 평가를 위한 가이드라인인 ‘학습과정’을 개발하여 수정 · 보완하며 사용하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통하여 <연합선교공의회> 주도의 공식적인 한국어교육이 실시되기 이전 초기 선교사들의 한국어 학습이 단순히 선교사 개인의 경험과 개인교사를 통한 개인적 학습이었을 것이라는 기존의 통념과는 달리 선교회 차원의 적극적인 통제 안에서 이루어졌음을 확인하였다.
Abstract
This study examines the literature left by the missionaries of the Methodist Episcopal Church(MEC), who were sent to Korea in the early days of the Protestant Mission. “Official Minutes”, the annual meeting minutes of the Korea Mission of the MEC, are a record of meetings and reports of the Committee on Study of Korean Language. This makes clear that the Korea Mission of the MEC operated the Committee on Study of Korean Language from 1888 to 1916. It was confirmed that Korean missionaries controlled and managed missionaries’ Korean learning through the development of the “Course of Study” featuring learner evaluation and promotion management. This study is the first discussion of the Korean language learning of missionaries in the early Protestant Mission, as this issue was not mentioned in the previous discussion, “The Federal Council Protestant Evangelical Missions.” It is meaningful that the missionaries’ Korean learning occurred through the control and management of the missions department, not the learning of the individual missionary.
