Abstract

Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture 16-1, 61-96. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether learners responded to a naturally occurring feedback discourse and recast in an actual Korean as a Second Language (KSL) classroom, and to analyze the data of general purpose Korean language classes. Data were collected from a total of 13 classes in four Korean language education institutions in the Seoul area, with differences in the teacher’s autonomy in each classroom’s operation. The average number of oral corrective feedback instances for each class was found in the order of Grammar lesson (50) > Vocabulary lesson (38.4) > Speaking lesson (31.5). The highest frequency among the feedback types was recast (257 times, 50.8%) out of a total of 506 instances of feedback. Next, it was found that 101 cases of induction (20.0%), 56 cases (11.1%) of complex feedback, 9 cases of clarification (9.1%), 25 cases of explicit correction (4.9%). 13 cases of repeat (2.6%), and meta-language explanation (1.6%). The attempts of recast by detailed length types were provided for clauses (202 times) > words (32 times) > phrases (20 times). The learner’s uptake rate from statistical analysis was for words (56.3%) > phrases (40.0%) > clauses (11.9%). Types of change were addition (114 times) > combination (82 times) > substitution (53 times) > deletion (5 times) > reordering(0 times). The learner uptake rate for these types were deletion (60.0%) > substitution (35.8%) > addition (18.4%) > combination (8.5%) > reordering (0%). The prevalence of linguistic focus was grammar (110 times) > vocabulary and grammar (92 times) > vocabulary (46 times) > pronunciation (5 times) > pronunciation and grammar (1 time). The learner uptake rate was pronunciation (100%) > vocabulary and grammar (39.1%) > vocabulary (30.4%) > grammar (16.4%) > pronunciation and grammar (0%). The main reasons for the learners’ non-uptake were related to the teacher resuming the topic on his/her own and correcting the error without giving the learner enough opportunities for correction and time. In this way, a learner’s response to the teacher’s oral corrective feedback can be suggested from the perspective of teaching and learning. As a result of test the significance in the relationship between the different characteristics of the recasts and learner uptake and repair by Pearson’s chi-square tests, with the alpha level set at p<.05. This study found that there is high relationship between teacher’s recasts and learner uptake in Korean Language Class. When teachers provide corrective feedback with recast, it would be effective to use a word-level length, and the change of substitution so that learners can clearly recognize and correct the error object. In addition, considering that learners respond best when they have asked for corrections in the order of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, the teachers should use supplementary speech and nonverbal expressions as well as provide adequate time for correction. The results of this study will be useful in developing teaching strategies that can be used to induce Korean learners’ uptake and to increase their opportunities for interaction.
