Abstract

The goal of this study was to examine possibility of bistable stimuli to research on attention and perceptual properties of ADHD tendency group. In research 1, we test whether there is a difference on percept switching and holding performance between ADHD tendency and control group with structure-from-motion (SFM). As a result, there is no difference in percept switching based on preferred direction between the groups. However, the holding duration for the non-preferred direction in the ADHD tendency group was significantly shorter than in the control group. Also, compared to neutral condition, the holding duration for the non-preferred direction in the ADHD tendency group was shorter. These results suggest that the ADHD tendency group has difficulty in perceptual inhibition, failing to suppress prepotent representations and sustain the opposite stimuli. In research 2, we test whether there is a difference in hysteresis properties between ADHD tendency and control group using the ambiguous motion quartet. As a result, ADHD tendency groups was less biased toward vertical motion, and hysteresis distance was significantly shorter than control group. It suggests that there may be excessive integration of information between the cerebral hemispheres in the ADHD tendency group compared to the normal group. In summary, this study reveals significant differences in hysteresis and attentional characteristics between the ADHD tendency group and the control group, highlighting the utility of bistable stimuli for demonstrating traits of this population.
